Roadblock Killer

No More Excuses

2025-01-09

Humans are amazing at making up excuses to not do things.
Almost every time, accomplishing a task feels insurmountable because of little roadblocks.

For example:

  • You want to redecorate your house. Where do you begin? How will it all look together in the end? What if the colours do not work? These are the roadblocks that are preventing you from moving forward.

    • Start in one room.
    • Even better, start in one part of one room.
    • Maybe paint the walls, or change out the furniture, or even just the curtains.
    • Once you start and change one thing, you can begin seeing through the haze. It will be a domino effect: one roadblock will knock down the next.
    • When you change the curtains from white to blue, you see that the wall needs to be painted to coordinate. Then, the couch needs updated. Then, all of the furniture will need rearranged. Finally, you will have redecorated that room, and you can move onto the next one.
  • You want to write a book, but the blank page keeps staring you in the face. This is a big roadblock that many have been met with. There are a tonne of smaller bollards that you can tackle:

    • Describe some potential main characters, locations, and time periods, and then let the story build around your descriptions of those.
    • Ask yourself queries about your characters. What do they like to eat? What do they enjoy doing? Where do they want to go?
    • Start with a story you already know. Write about yourself or a dream.
  • An employee is being treated poorly in the corporate world, and wants to quit to start his own business. The big roadblock here is fear of failure (or success for some). Not such a small blockade, but there are a bunch of blockers hiding in there that can be attended to:

    • What kind of business? What are you good at? Who would want your goods or services? Where do you find them?
    • Start by answering one query at a time, and you will start building your foundation.
    • Maybe you do not quit the day job just yet, but once the cement has been poured, it is just a matter of time for it to solidify.

All of those little things are holding you back.
Figure out how to knock them down, one little blockade at a time.
Once you have begun, the bricks will lay themselves.
